S.T.E.A.M.

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths. This subject area is an integrated approach to learning that combines these disciplines into a dynamic, hands-on educational framework. At Streeton Primary School, we proudly offer STEAM as a specialist subject, giving students the opportunity to explore and connect these areas through engaging weekly lessons.

Rather than teaching these subjects in isolation, STEAM encourages students to see their interconnections and apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems. Through collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity, students tackle challenges that are both meaningful and engaging.

Science in STEAM explores topics such as earth and environmental science, chemistry, biology, and physical science. Students also learn how to use the scientific method to observe, experiment, and report their findings.

Technology focuses on tools and systems that allow students to create and problem-solve. From coding with Bee Bots in the junior years to developing advanced computer programs using apps like Kodable in the upper years, students enjoy experimenting with digital technologies.

Engineering encourages students to design, build, and innovate. It nurtures teamwork, critical thinking, and complex problem-solving skills as they create and construct new ideas and solutions.

Arts is a vital component of STEAM, where students explore creativity through visual art. At Streeton, our Visual Arts program inspires self-expression and imagination as students engage in activities such as drawing, painting, sculpting with clay, creating mosaics, and making collages. They also learn about art history and cultural traditions, fostering an appreciation for diverse artistic styles. A cherished tradition at Streeton is our “Clay Leaf Project,” where Foundation students create and paint a clay leaf that is displayed on the Streeton art tree (pictured in the background of this page). This leaf is returned to them at their Year 6 graduation as a keepsake of their journey through primary school.

Maths in STEAM highlights its practical applications, helping students develop analytical and problem-solving skills. Through STEAM activities, students discover how maths is an essential tool in everyday life.

At Streeton, STEAM education inspires curiosity, fosters creativity, and prepares students for the future by emphasising collaboration, resilience, and innovative thinking. It’s a subject our students love and one that equips them with valuable skills for life.
