Kitchen

At Streeton Primary School, our Kitchen Program provides students with a unique opportunity to develop essential life skills through cooking. All students participate in weekly one-hour Kitchen lessons for half the year, alternating with the Farm Program. Held in our fully equipped Kitchen classroom, these engaging, hands-on sessions teach fundamental kitchen skills while fostering a love for fresh, healthy food.

Whenever possible, students use fresh produce from our school’s garden, creating a strong connection between farm and table. From peeling broad beans and chopping fresh herbs; to cracking eggs from our free-range hens, students learn to safely and confidently use kitchen tools and techniques. These activities not only build culinary skills, but also nurture teamwork, patience, and pride in their accomplishments.

Our students eagerly anticipate Kitchen classes, and their excitement often spills over into their homes as they share new recipes and skills with their families. This year, they’ve explored a variety of culinary traditions, from making pasta from scratch; to creating vibrant Rangoli toast for Diwali, blending indigenous-inspired smoothies for NAIDOC Week, and crafting classic favourites like sausage rolls. These experiences broaden their understanding of different cultures, while expanding their palates.

Looking to the future, we aspire to showcase our students’ talents by transforming our Kitchen classroom into the Streeton Café - a space where families can experience the delicious creations and witness the skills our young chefs have mastered. Stay tuned for this exciting possibility!
